This section compares his draft workout metrics with players at the same position. The bar represents the player’s percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that metric and it would be considered average.
The 49ers’ quarterback situation was mangled by injury in 2022, so the team brought in Sam Darnold and Allen to add veteran depth to the young position group. The latter comes in at fourth on the pecking order, giving him a slim chance to make the cut come Week 1. A sixth-round pick with Jacksonville in 2016, Allen has seen action as a backup with Denver and Cincinnati, completing 56.7 percent of his passes and 10 touchdowns to six interceptions over that span.
Usually when Allen enters the game, it’s bad news for the Bengals, as it signals an injury to starter Joe Burrow. Luckily last season, only one of Allen’s six appearances was due to that reason – the waning seconds of the regular season win over the Chiefs. Allen had one start when the Bengals rested Burrow in Week 18, and four other mop-up appearances, three with a prohibitive lead. He’ll hopefully fill the same role again this year.
Allen started the last five games of the 2020 season after Joe Burrow tore his ACL and MCL against Washington, with mediocre results — five touchdown passes against four interceptions, averaging 6.5 yards per attempt. Allen re-signed with the Bengals in March and will once again back up Burrow, who is expected to be ready for Week 1 against Minnesota.
A sixth-round selection in 2016, Allen is still looking to see the field in a regular-season game. With Jared Goff and Blake Bortles ahead of him on the Los Angeles depth chart, it’s unlikely his NFL debut comes with the Rams in 2019.
The 2016 sixth-round pick will once again open the season as the Jaguars’ No. 3 QB option behind Blake Bortles and Chad Henne. Ideally, he won’t have to see the field during the regular season, though if Bortles falters or goes down with an injury, it’s possible Jacksonville could give Allen a shot over the 31-year-old Henne. Allen did not appear in any regular season games as a rookie last season.
On the heels of a strong Senior Bowl showing, Allen was selected by the Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. The Arkansas product will look to crack the roster as the No. 3 quarterback behind Blake Bortles and Chad Henne.
