WTA Rankings: Swiatek slips to fifth before French Open title defence


Iga Swiatek slipped to fifth in the latest WTA Rankings released on Monday, which will be used for this year’s French Open draw.

The 23-year-old Swiatek will be looking to win a fourth straight and overall, her fifth title at Roland Garros which will be held in Paris from May 25 to June 8.

However, the Polish player, a former World No. 1, has been struggling since her triumph at the 2024 edition of the clay Major. Recently, she lost to American Danielle Collins in the round of 32 at the Italian Open, which led to her dropping from second to fifth place in the rankings.

Aryna Sabalenka continued to occupy the top spot while USA’s Coco Gauff returned to her career high ranking of 2 following her runner-up finish in Rome.

Jasmine Paolini, who won the Italian Open in front of home crowd, moved from fifth to fourth while Jessica Pegula, Gauff’s compatriot, moved from fourth to third.

Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva, who lost to Gauff in the quarterfinals in Rome, moved past Australian Open champion Madison Keys to take the sixth spot.

Elsewhere in the Top 100, USA’s Peyton Stearns (28th) and Hailey Baptiste (70th), Britain’s Sonay Kartal (53rd), Germany’s Eva Lys (59th) and Philippines’ Alexandra Eala (69th) reached new career high rankings.
