The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday announced that the upcoming edition of the eight-team women’s ODI World Cup will take place from September 30 to November 2 across five venues in India and Sri Lanka.
The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium (Bengaluru), ACA Stadium (Guwahati), Holkar Stadium (Indore), ACA-VDCA Stadium (Visakhapatnam), and R. Premadasa Stadium (Colombo) are the designated stadiums for the tournament. The Sri Lankan capital will be organising all games featuring Pakistan.
The event will commence in Bengaluru with India playing the first game. The host’s opponent, though, is yet to be decided. The last ICC global women’s event hosted by India was the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2016, when it was held alongside the men’s event.
The venues for the knockouts will depend on Pakistan‘s qualification, as two alternative venues have been identified for one semifinal and the final.
The first semifinal will take place in either Guwahati or Colombo on October 29, with the second to be played the following day in Bengaluru.
The two finalists will then have at least two days to prepare for the title decider to be held in either Bengaluru or Colombo on November 2.
The eight teams that will feature in the Women’s World Cup are India, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The teams will clash in 28 league matches in a round-robin format.
Australia is the defending champion and most successful team in the tournament’s history having won seven titles.
ICC chairman Jay Shah said: “Fans have shown great support for the women’s game in recent years, and I am sure they will start planning for these showpiece events now that they have key dates and venues. Women’s cricket stands at the forefront of our vision, and we are confident that these two upcoming tournaments will not only sustain the incredible momentum we’ve built in recent years but lift it to greater heights.”
