Welcome to Sportstar’s coverage of the final of the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup. This is Lavanya Lakshminarayanan and I’ll be taking you through action from Kuala Lampur on Sunday.

14:55 IST: Team India are now presented their winner’s medals. Here’s Niki Prasad on the win. Meanwhile, Neetu David is greeting each of the winners individually.

Niki Prasad: I think all of us tried to stay calm and down to earth. We just stuck to doing what our job is. If we won the toss, we might have picked batting too. But we wanted to just go out there and do the job. All the credit goes to our support staff for making this possible and nurturing the youngsters. BCCI has given us the best facilities.

I am feeling really happy that I am here, making sure India stays on top. It’s a special moment to play the World Cup and do this for India. At the start of the tournament, I mentioned that were here to dominate and ensure India stays on top. We’re definitly going to create that legacy of winning ICC trophies and winning a lot of trophies for India.

The South Africans have been playing really well. They came hard at us today. We’ve played against them a lot and the character they’ve shown, it’s really nice to see and nice to compete against them.

14:50 IST – South Africa is now presented its runner up medals.

Kayla Reyneke: A lot of emotions are on in this team. I will never take anything away from this team and this management. We worked really hard for this. I want to thank everyone involved in this tournament. I couldn’t have asked for a better team. We had a great run in the tournament. Special mention to the management. It’s tough to not take the trophy home but we’re coming home with our own silverware. (She tears up)

I always want the best for the team. I couldn’t have done it without them.

I always say, we never go down without a fight. That’s the South African spirit. We will come back stronger. This is motivation for us to come back stronger in 2027.

India came hard at us. It was a good game. They are something for us to look up to. Enjoy the moment and all the best.

14:50 IST – G. Trisha is also named Player of the Tournament. 309 runs, seven wickets. It has been her tournament through and through and she will be honoured by the chief selector of the Indian Women’s Senior Side – Neetu David.

IG Trisha: I would like to dedicate this award to my father. Without him, I wouldn’t be here. I’ve been working on my power game for a while. Our batting coach Apurva sir told me I will be opening the innings and asked me to be ready. I am always an allrounder. I want to play for my country and keep winning matches.

“Simply superb,” Trisha gushes. Lovely.

14:45 IST – G. Trisha wins the player of the match award. 44 runs from 33 balls and a three-wicket haul with the ball. An allround performance which has helped India comfortably retain its world crown.

G Trisha: Right now, I am not able to say anything. Thanks to my team and my support staff. I bowl to my strengths. I did the same thing today. Whatever we did in the other matches, we just stuck to the same thing in this game. I look up to Mithali di. She’s my idol. I hope even the coming World Cups come to India.

14:30 IST – IND vs SA, U19 T20 World Cup live updates: India has remained unbeaten in the tournament. Dominance through every stage of the tournament. Deserved winners of their second U19 Women’s T20 World Cup crown is Niki Prasad’s Army! The presentation ceremony is up next.

As India celebrates and does broadcast interviews, South Africa’s captain has brought the girls together in a huddle and is speaking them through the emotions of the loss. Can’t help but think of Dubai 2024 when the girls did the same under Wolvaardt. For India, so many of the girls here are two-time champions.

Kamalini interrupts the spinners’ interview to say: “ Cup ah thookitom!!!!” (We’ve lifted the cup)

The girls run in from the dugout. It is a tale of two sides here at the Oval. On one side, the Indians are ecstatic, on the other, the South Africans are crestfallen. Skipper Reyneke is on her knees, inconsolable. Quiet hugs follow. Eerie similarities to that Senior World Cup a few months ago. Once again, South Africa falls short in a final. India was too good for them.

Jemma Botha comes in for what might be the last over of this match. Chalke’s footwork has been impeccable as she guides the ball to the boundary to get closer to the win. FOUR. After being scattered across the dugout, the players have congregated to the seats in one place to run in for the win. Good planning in all departments from India. Trisha then gets an edge in trying to steer it doiwn third again. Same result, so no fear. FOUR. Three to win. Nine runs off the over, but the win won’t come just yet.

18 runs needed to win from 66 balls for India. In comes Monalisa Legodi. Begins with a wide to left-handed Sanika Chalke. Chance to remove Trisha. Difficult and doesn’t work out for the fielder at cover. Kamalini is seen patting her chest to calm the nerves. Mieke van voorst has been diving about all through. She almost got it, but it spilt out. Six runs off the over. India needs 12 runs from the last 10 overs to win this game and the title. But first, drinks.

25 runs needed to win off 72 balls. Reyneke will bowl out. The skipper has tried valiantly. But the runs just weren’t enough to trouble India. Starts with a single, Trisha working the ball to midwicket. A wide follows after Sanika tries to sweep a ball straying away. Good strike rotation from the Indian pair who manage seven runs off the over.

Van Wyk’s leg spin has been introduced. Sanika gets a single up front. Trisha is in the form of her life. Short ball from Van Wyk and Trisha loves it. Full power as she gets the ball through deep midwicket for FOUR. India’s team fifty comes up. Couple of singles follow for the pair. A FOUR to finish the over as Sanika drills this over the bowler’s head. Beautiful shot.

Reyneke continues. Can she do something here? Dot to begin, Trisha sending the ball straight back to the bowler. A single for Trisha, dot for Sanika. Tight bowling from the captain. Finally angles it into the batter and Sanika flicks away square on the legside for a single. She then allows Trisha some room too, but there’s a short third fielder who won’t allow the single. Just two runs coming off the over.

47 to win for India. 90 balls to get it in. Cowling comes in for her second. Dot for Trisha first off. Cut straight to the fielder at point. Big smiles on the Indian pair’s faces as Sanika now gets off the mark with a boundary. Nice shot through cover, beats a fielder by a good margin. FOUR. Couple of singles, a wide follows. South Africa desperate to straighten their lines. It does not help that the first two partnerships for India are LH-RH. So adjustments required too. Eight runs from this over.

Reyneke returns. Two dots to Kamalini. Off that second ball, she tries to stop the ball but cops a hit on the foot. She looks like she’s in a bit of pain. Reyneke will be rewarded for the pain as Kamalini is taken out! She is ecstatic, the South African captain. Just the motivation South Africa needed. She didn’t middle that too well, did Kamalini and Lourens dives for a brilliant one handed catch at long on. WICKET G Kamalini c Lourens b Reyneke 8 (13b 1×4 0x6) SR: 61.53. Seshnie Naidu’s leg spin is introduced now. Begins with a dot ball which Trisha swats down to the pitch almost. She then goes wide and Trisha loves the room she has to cut the ball between cover and point for FOUR. Too much space allowed. The next one is straighter and Trisha is forced to defend. Better from Seshnie. Another dot follows. Trisha is using the field to her advantage. Places a faster delivery from Seshnie through third man for FOUR. Batting clinic happening here from the young Indian. Under pressure now, Seshnie sends out a loose ball. Full toss going down leg. Too simple for Trisha to swat this away square on the leg side for four runs! Big over this, 12 runs off it.

Reyneke brings herself on. Kamalini shows no respect. Goes down on one knee almost to go over deep midwicket for FOUR. Mumbai Indians, the side she is set to represent in the WPL, are going to love what they’re seeing here. Dot to follow. Kamalini then slogs the ball over the fielder at midwicket. Good footwork to pull that ball that way, fielder can’t get to it though. Single for Trisha to follow. Nervy stops in the field for the Proteas which is allowing India time to run the ones. Six runs off the over.

Fay Cowling from the other end. A single to start. Cowling bowls down leg and Kamalini steers the ball fine for one run. A boundary follows for Trisha as the inner circle proves a bit porous. Hard stop for a diving Protean fielder and the ball runs away through extra cover. Dot follows, beaten infact. Stray bowl by Cowling who goes too wide outside off. An extra condeded. Trisha is on another level. Powerfully smacks the ball up over cover for four. Bowler and captain are having a word about a change in field. There’s a deep sweeper now. Cowling still goes wide outside off. Extra. Long over this for South Africa. Trisha tries to nudge the ball past slip but no success.

Nini will begin proceedings in the chase from the Negara End. Kamalini takes strike and will defend first up. She can attack the stumps, just what South Africa needs. First run for Kamalini as she pushes the ball through point. Trisha finds the first boundary of the innings as she cuts the ball which takes an edge and runs away past the keeper for FOUR. Could Miso have caught that? Her gloves grazed that ball. Would have been a key wicket and a big boost for the side. But the Proteas have to move on and not obsess. Single for Trisha down third man. Seven runs off the first. Strong start for India.

Innings summary:

A spin squeeze from India has put the holders in a comfortable position to defend their title. Good fielding, aggression from the inner circle to contain runs are the nuances we might not appreciate enough, but the fact remains that South Africa was not allowed any room to even try and challenge India. That first over looked promising from the Proteas but there wasn’t much to celebrate. A few important partnerships formed, but India held the noose tight. The Indian chase follows. The question now is, how quickly will India chase this down? Or can South Africa’s bowlers shock the defending champion?

Parunika will cap the innings. Two dots to begin. Nthabiseng Nini takes the score up to 82 with a single. Van Wyk can’t get away, two dot balls follow. Dot ball pressure piles and Van Wyk tries an uppish sweep to find runs. She ends up holing out to Vaishnavi Sharma at square leg. South Africa all out for 82. Vaishnavi to bowl out and Fay Cowling shows intent with a smooth SIX, the first of the innings. Vaishnavi will have the last laugh though as she is castled by Vaishnavi two deliveries later. WICKET Fay Cowling b Vaishnavi Sharma 15 (20b 0x4 1×6) SR: 75. Two new batters at the crease yet again for South Africa and these are batters who have not had to bat in this tournament. Untested being tested on the biggest stage of them all. Vaishnavi Sharma doesn’t care. SHe’s busy trying to clean house. Trisha will bowl out. A dot and a single for Cowling. Van Voorst then dares to go big. Sweeps fine for FOUR. Brave innings this from the South African bat. She even lost balance there. All for the cause. The pair then runs a quick two runs. Trisha then castles van Voorst who has to go after a well-made 18-ball 23. She was well out of the crease in trying to swing big to find the boundary, but missed the ball completely. Simple stumping for Kamalini. Vaishnavi comes for her third over. Joshitha has two left. Shabnim too. Mieke van Voorst is only focussed on the job at hand. Walks down a little to then sweep the ball over deep backward square for FOUR. Good shot this. A dot follows. Four more runs are managed by the Proteas off the last three balls of the over. Ticking away slowly. This is a positive partnership for the South Africans. Nine from the over. Four overs remain in this innings.

Trisha continues. Van voorst edges the ball fine for a single. Dot. Cowling then gets another single down long on. Van Voorst also goes down long on. OH WAS THAT A CHANCE? A caught and bowled opportunity for India but it looks like Trisha has put it down. Tough one these chances. Four runs come off the over.

Aayushi to bowl out. Plenty of attempts to play on the body of the batter by the Indian spinner. She is not allowing any room. Cowling manages a single when the ball moves away a bit, enough for Cowling to swat it down the ground for one run. Van Voorst brings up a boundary for South Africa after 56 balls! FOUR runs with a sweep over backward square. Brings up the South Africa team 50 too. Aayushi goes into Van Voorst’s body again and in trying to hit the ball, she misses, ball misses her and goes through Kamalini for a bye. Six runs come off the over.

Parunika continues. We can hear Niki Prasad screaming, “Shabu…be readyyy..” Some pace to follow surely. Parunika appeals for a caught and bowled off the second delivery. Cowling drilled the ball back to Parunika. The ball goes to her hand but the ball drops. We need to see if her fingers are well under it. We see a finger, but is it enough for the appeal to be successful? Not out says the third umpire. That bob on the ground not helping. Fay Cowling then slaps the ball through short mid on for a quick single. Van voorst follows suit with a single down long on. Similar single for Cowling. Just three runs from this over.

Aayushi Shukla returns for her third over. She has not conceded a run yet. That will change with van Voorst running a single right off the bat. Meso wants runs and she moves across the stumps, exposing them a fair bit to sweep the ball square. There’s a fielder there. Just a single. Van voorst then smacks the ball through short mid off for a single. SECOND WICKET FOR AAYUSHI. Meso tries to sweep, misses and out goes MESO! Stumps rattled and how! 13th wicket of the tournament for the left arm spinner. It was a full delivery and not the one to sweep. Trisha continues. Reyneke slices the ball to point for a single. T RISHA GETS HER FIRST WICKET. South African captain Reyneke went big after going down on knee, slightly wider ball from Trisha giving her room to swing her arms. But Parunika Sisodia was waiting to catch the ball at long off. Vaishnavi Sharma comes in for her second. Two singles right up front. Oscillating between fuller and short deliveries here. We’re seeing some footwork from the South Africans now. They need to access more parts of the ground and go for a few low sweeps too if possible. Meso seems to be doing just that. Five singles off this over for the Proteas.

The leg spin of G. Trisha being introduced now. Reyneke finally breaks free as she slogs the ball over mid on for a single. Stump to stump bowling by Trisha who is here to contain if not to remove. Meso is trying to power some of these shots through but isn’t getting enough to get the ball away. There was a big outside edge which went straight to the pads of Kamalini. Safe. Just one run from the over. Kamalini attempts a stumping on her opposite number. Players move on but the umpire wants to see that delivery again. Meso has her feet in. Safe. Time for drinks.

Vaishnavi Sharma bowls her first over. Leading wicket taker of the tournament. Meso tries to sweep but doesn’t execute perfect. Ball goes past keeper. Just a single. She will concede just one more run. Spin squeeze working for India.

More left arm spin. Parunika returns for her second. Meso looks to the leg side and pulls to deep midwicket for a single. Good footwork to break free. Reyneke looks like she’s a bit inside a shell at the moment. Parunika is keeping it full to her and cramping her for space. She isn’t able to get the ball away. There’s plenty of vacant property in the leg side for her, but she’ll have to sweep which has been an issue. Parunika goes yorker length now and Reyneke defends safely. Just one run from the over.

Aayushi back for her second. Pressure on Reyneke and Meso now. South Africa needs to rotate strike. Three dots for Reyneke who wants to stay for the long haul, wear down the spinners and then get going. WAIT, what’s happened here? Length ball from Aayushi with Reyneke coming down the ground to try and go big. She misses and Kamalini misses, would have been a perfect stumping chance, the South African skipper was well outside the crease. Aayushi bowls a maiden over. South Africa under the pump here. Could have had a wicket, but India won’t complain.

Shabnam is back for her second over. Angles the ball into the right handed Reyneke. Single through third man. She then sends a slightly loose ball outside off and Meso has smacked this through cover and point for FOUR. Nice cut shot this. Shabnim lost shape there. It’s forced Niki Prasad, the Indian captain to keep a slip for the batters now. Two dots follow. Good attacking fields and intent to stop runs from India so far in the PowerPlay. Just the five runs from this over, but no wickets lost. PowerPlay done and it’s India all the way.

Spin introduced again. Aayushi Shukla comes in now and strikes FIRST BALL. Arm ball to Ramlakan who makes a mess of it and the stumps are rattled. South Africa in big big trouble now. Ramlakan tried to play across the line but has to go back. WICKET Diara Ramlakan b Aayushi Shukla 3 (8b 0x4 0x6) SR: 37.5. Keeper Karabo Meso is the new batter in. She attempts a sweep, a shot we were all calling a no no on this wicket. She will get rewards. It beats the keeper, wide to her left infact and runs away for FOUR LEG BYES.

Shabnim Shakil replaces Parunika Sisodia. Single right up front by Botha. Misfield gives the South Africans that run to be fair. India will want Botha off strike at the very least as much as possible. Three dots follow. Shabnim is pushing hard to go full and try and beat the batters on flight of the ball. Ramlakan has been trying to get the ball away and needs to not get frustrated. Shabnim then goes full but angles the ball into and up on the batter, forcing Ramlakan to block on the backfoot with a straight back. Single. Botha back on strike. LAST BALL AND SHABNIM HAS HER FIRST WICKET AND IT’S THE DANGEROUS BOTHA! BIG CELEBRATIONS FROM INDIA AND WHY NOT? Shabnim temps Botha outside off and she bites. Joshitha is back for her second over. Goes full first up. Dot ball. Botha then releases the pressure a bit with a shot straight down the ground for FOUR. South Africa needs to rotate strike to keep the scoreboard ticking. Joshitha goes wide outside off and Botha cuts the ball for a single. First runs follow for Ramlakan as she drives the ball through backward point. Slight misfield from Shabnim which permits the pair to run two. Two dots follow including a dicey inside edge. No more damage for the Proteas.

Spin in the second over itself. No waiting. Good intent from the Indian field. Parunika Sisodia comes in looking for an early wicket with an offside field that will eat up the batters if allowed. The ball is skidding through early. Three dots to begin. Botha again goes back, big bat swing, but barely connects this well. Big top edge but it falls safely. Just a single off the fourth delivery. Lourens then smacks the ball straight to the fielder at mid off. THE BOWLING CHANGE PAYS OFF. Simone Lourens falls for a duck. Parunika gently drifts one in, going between middle and leg. Pacer Joshitha VJ will get INdia started. She’s up against Jemma Botha and Simone Lourens. The pacers had a tough time in the previous outing with errant lines and a wide deliveries allowing England to get going. India will want to allow none of that. Joshitha does give Botha room to try and hit and produce an error. South Africa has done its homework. Joshitha pulls the length back off the third delivery (bowled again after conceding a wide), but Botha is ready with an open bat, swatting it over the bowler’s head for FOUR. Back-to-back fours for Botha as she flicks the very next ball through backward square leg for FOUR. Joshitha went full here but Botha did well to read the line and get the same result. She then gets a half volley down third man for a single. 10 runs off the first over.

South Africa will draw a lot of confidence from the way they beat a strong Australia in the semifinal. It was their first full game after severe rain interruptions and changes in their fixtures till then. Batting against a strong Indian bowling unit whose spin attack has thrived in Malaysia will be the big challenge. A strong total will keep the final competitive. India’s left-arm spin trio will want to do everything in its might to prevent gains for the Proteas.
